Pet Hypothesis Jewelry
What happens when ReadyMade Magazine's product manager takes her CCA jewelry background and creates a new collection? The result is Chelsa Robinson's Pet Hypothesis and its inaugural collection, Gravity Max. The Gravity Max Collection transforms repurposed billboard scraps into art. Pet Hypothesis is an ongoing experiment that reuses material waste in pursuit of quality, integrity, originality, and sustainability.

I just bought a hunk of recycled billboard material from the ReadyMag magazine store and boy does it smell of chemicals (formaldehyde?). It's been outgassing outside for a week now. Everything that gets next to it has the same chemical smell. Do you know anything about this? I'm thinking this stuff was meant to be outside, far above our heads. Is it really okay to use indoors, or for advertised uses like handbags, upholstery, and wristbands?

Regarding the off-gassing concerns, I just received a sample pair of the earrings and gave them a good sniff. There is a faint smell to them - it seems to be more from the billboard inks rather than the vinyl.
In general, anything vinyl will off-gas as that is the nature of the material. The smell will fade over time. A good analogy is "new car" smells. That said, the broader issue for me is this... as an individual, you cannot eliminate society's use of vinyl (which , unlike aluminum cans and plastic bottles, cannot be "recycled" in the traditional sense). So the next best thing is to at least find ways to divert vinyl waste from making it to landfills. Re-purposing it into other products at least extends the lifespan of the material.
